Sandra Honer

Sandra Honer, 85, of Grosse Pointe Farms, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 12, 2024.

Born May 27, 1938, in Detroit, to Jeff and Stella (nee Sajewicz) Bennett, Sandra grew up in Birmingham and graduated from Birmingham High School. She attended one year at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., but would have been the first to say her greatest achievements were her children and grandchildren. For this she did not need any classes; she was a natural. Sandy was a generous soul with a huge heart and never had a bad word to say about anyone. She truly loved life and there was never a shortage of fun, laughter or adventure.

This sense of adventure inspired many trips and cruises to several countries across the globe. Sandy became quite the expert traveler who truly enjoyed learning about and connecting with other cultures, people and customs.

Sandy also lived in a handful of states, spending most of the last 35 years in Sun City West, Ariz., with her beloved husband, Wesley Honer. Although the community was considered a “retirement community,” Sandy and Wes did anything but. Together they were active community and club members and participated in a number of activities, including golf, horseback riding, dance, arts and crafts, bowling, gambling and dominoes. Thanks to Sandy’s passion for dominoes, the tradition will live on in their family for years to come.

In 2018, Sandy moved back to Michigan to be closer to family. She subsequently was diagnosed with advanced-stage dementia.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother whose nurturing heart and generous spirit will be greatly missed, but will forever bless the lives of those who knew and loved her.

She will be deeply missed by her children, Jeff Shannon, Karen Lawrence (Cameron), Thomas Shannon (Wendy) and Robert Shannon (Germaine); grandchildren, Jessie, Johnathan, Emily, Nathan, Benjamin, Peter and Annette; and great-granddaughters, Rogan and Cameron. She also is survived by her sister, Karen Bettcher (Larry); and numerous nieces and nephews. Sandy was predeceased by her parents, Jeff and Stella Bennett; her loving husband, Wesley Honer; and daughter-in-law, Dawn Shannon.

A celebration of life will occur at a later date.
