Detweiler wins for Blue Devils, Agius to represent Norsemen at statesFree Access

Close up shoes running on trailConditions were far from ideal Friday for the boys cross country regional finals. With Grosse Pointe South hosting more than a dozen other schools at Chandler Park Golf Course, the wet and rainy weather did not stop the race from going. It also did not stop some incredible performances, including a race win and state-qualifying spot for the Blue Devils and a trip to states for one of the Norsemen.

South junior Logan Detweiler ran his way to a commanding victory with a finishing time of 17:01.8. Detweiler’s winning time was more than 30 seconds better than second place, and helped propel the Blue Devils to a third-place finish in the team standings and a team berth in the state finals.

The Blue Devils had three more runners finish in the top 20 to help the team qualify for states. Seniors Jack Hurst (17:57.7), Jake Vallan (18:06.8) and Chas Mathis-Baliatico (18:11.8) were among the top 20 to cross the finish line. Michael Wholihan (18:16.6) and Brendan Downey (18:27.5) were not far behind with top 25 finishes.

The Norsemen were right behind South in fourth place of the team standings. North fell just short of making it to states as a team, but the Norsemen will still be represented at the finals thanks to a strong day in regionals by Alex Agius.

Agius (17:54.8) was North’s top finisher Friday, crossing the finish line 12th overall. Senior captain Max Kluge (18:31.3) recovered from an early fall on the slippery course and ended up with a top-30 finish.

Paul Ciaravino (18:53.3) and Daniel Weber (18:53.7) crossed the finish line back-to-back to make the top 40. Michael Villenueve (19:00.9), Michael Fox (19:10.0) and Jack McConaghy (19:11.2) rounded out the field for the Norsemen on a day where all of North’s runners finished in the top 50.

The Blue Devils and Agius now get ready to move on to the Division 1 state finals this weekend. They will run Saturday at the Michigan International Speedway.
