Head coach Don Wolford knew the Division 2 regional semifinal game against Haslett-Williamston would be close.

The teams met earlier in the season and the host Blue Devils blew a late two-goal lead en route to a 10-9 loss.

It was a nip-and-tuck game at Madison Heights Bishop Foley, but in the end the Blue Devils, the No. 3 seed, lost another one-goal game, 7-6, to the No. 2 seed.

Neither offense could get an advantage as defense and goaltending dominated.

Grosse Pointe South finished the season 14-5 overall and loses seniors Andrew Cornwall, Jack Denison, Caleb Cimmarrusti, Karstan Minanov, Sam Wilkinson, Archer Hauck, Graham Browmwell, Andrew Hyde, John Whitney and Andrew Wright to graduation.

Girls’ results

First-year head coach Alycsa Valentine had her Grosse Pointe South girls’ lacrosse team ready to make a deep run in the Division 1 state playoffs.

Unfortunately, host Bloomfield Hills didn’t cooperate and handed South a 15-10 loss in a regional first-round game played Friday, May 23.

Elizabeth Rauh led the team with four goals, while Bridgette Champane had three. Margaret Brennan, Carson Dennis and Ryley Kerik scored a goal apiece.

“The girls played their hearts out,” Valentine said. “Bloomfield won the draw control battle was what it really came down to. It was an early end to a spectacular season.”

The Blue Devils finished the season 10-3-1 overall.

Despite the playoff defeat, the Blue Devils had several players earn post-season honors.

Bridgette Champane, Tara McClanaghan, Elizabeth Rauh, Margaret Brennan, Mia Doyon and Shannon Novak earned First Team All-League, while Ryley Kerik, Julia Fox, Emily Mlynarek, Emma Baer, Mary Reiber and Claire Fisher made Second Team All-League.

Earning First-Team All-State honors were Champane and Novak, and Rauh made Second Team All-State.

All-State Honorable Mention went to McClanaghan, Kerik, Mlynarek, Brennan and Doyon.
