The Grosse Pointe South boys’ basketball team had two tough back-to-back road games last week.

Two wins would put the Blue Devils in the driver’s seat in the Macomb Area Conference Blue Division title race and a split would keep them in decent shape.

Unfortunately for the Blue Devils, they lost both by three points, falling 67-64 to Madison Heights Madison and 61-58 to division-leading Warren Fitzgerald.

“Our guys played tough in both games, but didn’t come out on top in either one against two very skilled basketball teams in their gyms,” head coach Troy Glasser said. “We had our chances in each one, but came up a possession short.”

The Blue Devils trailed Madison by 20 points before roaring back and had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but a three-point attempt rimmed out.

It was the opposite scenario against Fitzgerald as the Blue Devils took an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter, 51-43, after trailing 30-19 at the half.

Host Fitzgerald made the comeback, outscoring South 18-7 to win 61-58 and remain unbeaten in the division.

This game was scheduled to be played Jan. 28, but it was postponed due to inclement weather.

Senior Dan Dixon was the Blue Devils’ leading scorer in each game, tallying 20 points against Madison and 31 against Fitzgerald.

South returned home to beat Fraser 72-60 as it led 21-14 after the first quarter and 38-25 at the half.

It was 59-40 when the third quarter horn sounded and the home team cruised to the win behind a balanced scoring attack, led by Dixon’s 18 points.

Seniors Jabari Burton and Darius Harris scored 10 and nine points, respectively, followed by junior Sam Kingsley with eight.

Grosse Pointe South dipped to 7-2 in the MAC Blue Division and 13-3 overall.
