Depleted team drops meet

The Grosse Pointe United gymnastics team evened its record at 1-1 last week, losing 137.225-133.75 to Farmington.

Several girls missed the meet due to illness.

The host Norsemen won the floor exercise, 35.85-34.625, but lost on vault, 35.7-34.3; bars, 31.8-29.8; and balance beam, 35.1-33.8.

Leading the way for GPU on vault was Isabelle Nguyen, scoring a 9.15. She was followed by Cait Gaitley with an 8.50, Michelle Ellis with an 8.35, Maria Nguyen with an 8.30, Jen Gmeiner with an 8.25 and Gyanei’ Johnson with a 7.95.

On bars, Isabelle Nguyen had a 9.00, followed by Gmeiner with an 8.40, Ellis with a 7.60 and Johnson with a 4.80.

Head coach Courtney Schafer watched nearly most of her gymnasts compete on the beam, with Isabelle Nguyen scoring a 9.60.

Other scorers, in no numerical order, were Ellis with a 7.30, Gaitley with an 8.50, Gmeiner with a 7.75, Johnson with a 6.95, Amy Olson with a 7.95, Mychael Furman with a 6.25, Chandler McClarty with a 7.85, Kelsey Newa with a 6.60 and Olyvia Shimko with a 7.90.

On the floor exercise, GPU had several record scores above a 9.0, including Isabelle Nguyen with a 9.30. Maria Nguyen scored a 9.05 and Gaitley had a 9.00. Others were Gmeiner with an 8.05, Johnson with an 8.35, Olson with an 8.50, Brenna Bromwell with a 7.15 and McClarty with an 8.15.
