The Grosse Pointe South senior class of cross country teammates has had a remarkable run of success over their four year span.“This group of seniors has been at the heart of our program for four years,” head coach Steve Zaranek said. “We could see something special in place during the summer practices just before they began ninth grade. They understood commitment from day one. They understood work ethic from day one. And most of all, they understood the importance of being great teammates.”And, along the way, they were part of a team that, since 2010, accomplished a 60-0 dual meet mark, four Macomb Area Conference Red Division championships, four state regional championships, 18 individual championships, four top-7 state finals finishes, including the runner-up title in 2012 and the state championship in 2011.Members of the senior class included Alexa Calas, Allison Cornell, Ellie Costakis, Kara Couvreur, Gretchen Cozad, Janey Degnan, Arianna DerManulian, Megan Dziedzic, Christy Finkenstaedt, Lindsay Fisher, Rachel Forcillo, Caroline Forster, Devyn Gilbert, Anne Gutwald, Grace Harper, Bridget Hennessy, Ellen High, Mai Qiang Hipsley, Gen Hummer, Olivia Jones, Elise Koelsch, Alessandra Lai, Alex Martin, Rachel Martinez, Bella McKay, Shannon Morris, Victoria Penman, Kaela Sanocki, Katie Savinov, Kelsie Schwartz, Eilzabeth Trudel, Evelyn Wheeler and Claire Zimmeth.At the recent team awards night, Schwartz and junior Ersula Farrow were named the teams co-most valuable athletes.Calas was given the Blue Devil of the Year Award; freshman Kamryn Leonard was named the team’s Rookie of the Year, while freshman Katie Kuhr was named Most Improved.Special Captain’s Awards were presented to Finkenstaedt, Sophie Meszaros, Andie Anger, Hope Adams and Mary Spencer.
