Free holiday parking

CITY OF GROSSE POINTE — Weekend shoppers in the Village can legally do something during the upcoming holidays that many would like to do year ’round — park for free.

Off-street parking fees in Village surface lots are waived on weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Parking is free in surface lots on Saturday and Sunday:

Nov. 30 and Dec. 1,

Dec. 7 and 8,

Dec. 14 and 15 and

Dec. 21 and 22.

Normal promotions remain in the Village parking structure:

Parking in the structure is always free on Sunday.

Also, three hours of parking is free daily Monday through Saturday with validation from Trader Joes.

This is the fourth consecutive year parking fees are waived in surface lots. The purpose is to promote holiday shopping in downtown City of Grosse Pointe.

Yet, as City Manager Peter Dame said, “There’s no such thing as free parking.”

The promotion is forecast to cut municipal revenue by about $24,000.

“(We) estimated that each free weekend will cost the city’s parking fund a reduction of budgeted revenue of approximately $6,000,” Dame said.

Half of the projected loss is being covered this year by the Grosse Pointe Village Downtown Development Authority.

“The DDA, like the business community, felt that providing free parking was a good marketing tool,” Dame said.

The promotion is concurrent with approximately two hours of free parking at meters throughout the city any time from Thanksgiving to Christmas for users of the Parkmobile wireless payment system.
