Grosse Pointe South and Grosse Pointe North girls’ cross country teams dominated last weekend’s Division 1 regional meet at Metro Beach.For the 34th year in a row, a state record, South competes in the state Division 1 finals. The championship was South’s 12th straight regional title and 23rd of the past 25 years.South won the 17-team regional with 19 points, followed by Grosse Pointe North (64), Troy (93), Berkley (152) and Royal Oak (165). The top three qualified for the state finals.The Blue Devils crushed the competition, taking six of the top eight places and were once again led by the dominant performance of junior Ersula Farrow, who won the race with a time of 18:00.Placing second and third were the South senior tandem of Kelsie Schwartz (18:29) and Alexa Calas (18: 55).Breaking the 19-minute barrier for the first time this year were juniors Megan Sklarski (18:55) and Mary Spencer (also 18:55). Sophomore Anna Piccione also earned All-Region Honors with her eighth-place finish at 19:16. Junior Sarah O’Neill completed the South varsity line-up with a 20:17 performance, just three seconds off her season best PR.“This was an extraordinary day and I was stunned by how well we did, how good we looked and how great we were as teammates,” South head coach Steve Zaranek said.“We finished 2nd to South and made it to states,” North head coach Scott Cooper said. “It feels really great after missing out last year by one spot.”The Norsemen’s top runners who earned All-Region honors were senior Sarah Rustmann, seventh with a time of 19:14; sophomore Katelyn Carney, 10th with a time of 19:30; senior Natalie Schaefer, 11th with a time of 19:30.5; and senior Julia Rustmann, 12th with a time of 19:31.The rest of Cooper’s varsity lineup included sophomore Keri Hryciuk, who finished 24th with a time of 20:33.5, junior Maddy Denison, 27th with a time of 20:42; and freshman Quinn Pangborn, 40th with a time of 21:38.South and North compete in the Division 1 finals at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Michigan International Speedway.
