Assumption Summer Youth Camp students recently completed session one, which included a Theater Art camp. Harry Burkey, theater director and producer and former member of the Grosse Pointe Theater, led the camp, in which each student wrote and presented his own news broadcasts and Burkey filmed and edited the work. By camp’s end, students were given a DVD of their news clips to take home.During session one, students also enjoyed field trips to the Grosse Pointe Woods Lakefront Park and Michigan Science Center, as well as in-school assemblies featuring Donny’s Zoo to You from Lou’s Pet Shop (pictured above), Huron-Clinton Metropark’s Fond of Ponds and an Artist Exploration. Registration for session two, held July 22 to August 22, is currently open. Session two focuses on creative arts activities and features Detroit Institute of Arts clinics at Assumption, which include art making, art discussions and Visual Thinking Strategies from the DIA educational staff. The clinic culminates in a field trip to the DIA.Also included in session two, Arts & Scraps visits the school to teach students about creating art with recycled materials, using the Detroit River as its theme. Midtown’s new Sugar Hill Clay Studio introduces students to pottery making, and Wayne State University students, under the direction of Kypros Markou, WSU professor and director of orchestral studies, educate camp students about instruments and help them present a culminating concert.Rounding out the session’s offerings, Kim Slone leads a volleyball clinic and Angelo Gust a basketball clinic, and students take additional field trips to the Detroit Zoo, Comerica Park and Lakefront Park.Full- or half-day sessions are available. The half-day program runs from 9 a.m. to noon, while the full day is 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Summer camp registration fee is $75. Camp is for children ages 1 to 6. Availability is limited.
