Part of St. Paul on the Lake Catholic School’s school-wide service project program, Kaitlin Popielarz’s seventh grade class visited Gleaners Community Food Bank Wednesday, Jan. 23, and folded 3,559 plastic bags in preparation for the nonprofit organization’s upcoming food drive.

The 25 students made a competition of their task, organizing themselves into groups of five or six, and folding as many plastic bags as possible within the given time frame.

“We had one-and-a-half hours to fold the bags and we set a Gleaners record for the most bags folded in that time,” Popielarz said in a release. “The kids were so excited.”

Inspired by their trip, the students have organized a food drive of their own during Catholic School’s Week, Jan. 25 to Feb. 1. All donations benefit Gleaners.

“I am so proud of them and so happy they were inspired to start their own food drive,” Popielarz said.
