Grosse Pointe North’s wrestling team, for the third time in January, split its league dual meets last week.

The Norsemen, under head coach Eric Julien, made huge strides this winter. Last year they lost all league matches, but this season they improved to 3-3 in the Macomb Area Conference Gold Division after beating Warren Cousino 39-36 and losing 42-39 to Warren Mott.

Against Mott, senior Mike Bennett won by tech fall in the 125-pound division and junior Andrew Lock, 152 pounds, won a major decision. The Norsemen’s other 24 points were earned by voids.

Senior Paul Menth, 145 pounds; sophomore Mike Bowden, 160 pounds; junior Adam Roach, 171 pounds; and freshman Joe Lawnicki, 189 pounds; won those voided matches.

In the close win over Cousino, freshman Chase Moceri won by pin at 103 pounds, as did junior Jaron Nelson at 119 pounds, sophomore Kushtrim Berisha at 135 pounds, Lock at 152 pounds and Bowden at 160 pounds.

Bennett won by decision at 125 pounds and Menth won by void at 145 pounds.

Thanks to more wrestlers on the roster and extra dedication, Julien has the Norsemen earning respect in every event.

Grosse Pointe South, under head coach Greg Snider, are in the middle of the pack in the MAC Silver Division.

The Blue Devils recently split two division matches, losing to Center Line and beating Madison Heights Madison, plus lost to St. Clair Shores Lakeview last week.

The Blue Devils sit at 3-2 in the MAC Silver Division.
