Grosse Pointe North junior Yarnell Waller sang an inspired National Anthem before the boys’ varsity team took to the court in its Macomb Area Conference White Division game against Utica.

When the final note left his lips, Waller received a standing ovation which carried over as the Norsemen pounded Utica 61-49.

It didn’t start out well as the Norsemen played a lackluster opening half. When the horn sounded, North trailed 27-26.

“I told the guys we were playing uninspired basketball and they had to come out and play with intensity and energy,” head coach Matt Lockhart said. “The guys turned it around.”

Let by junior Jacob Zacharias’ 11 third-quarter points and senior Ricky Watson’s 10 fourth-quarter points, the Norsemen outscored the Chieftains 35-22 in the second half to post a convincing victory.

Zacharias hit three three-pointers in the pivotal third quarter and finished with 13 points, while Watson’s baskets came on drives through the lane and he finished with 17 points.

Sophomore Tim Herd was also in double digits, scoring 12 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots. Another low-post player, junior Justin Kennedy, had eight points and nine rebounds.

Seniors Taiwan Wiggins had seven points and Chris Doherty four to round out the Norsemen’s offensive output.

Earlier in the week, North withstood Roseville’s fourth-quarter comeback to win 44-43.

Watson had 17 points and senior Robert Tillman added eight.

With the victories, Grosse Pointe North improved to 2-1 in the MAC White Division and 5-3 overall.
