Norsemen win opener

The Grosse Pointe North boys’ swimming and diving team started off the season with a 106- 77 win over Utica Stevenson last week.

Matt Leone was a double winner, taking the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke to lead the Norsemen.

Single winners included Patrick Turnbull in the 200-yard individual medley, William McNelis in the diving competition and Danny MacAskill in the 500-yard freestyle.

North moved to 1-1 in dual meet competition, losing 121.5-63.5 to L’Anse Creuse.

Turnbull was North’s sole first place winner, taking the 100-yard freestyle.

Head coach Mike O’Connor said season-best performance were recorded in the 50-yard freestyle by Matt Stander; in the 100-yard freestyle by Turnbull and A.J. Owens; in the 200-yard freestyle by MacAskill and Jacob Flowers; in the 100-yard backstroke by Mathew Leone, Alex Owens and John Leone; in the 100-yard breastroke by Stander, John Hales and Michael Rieth; in the 100-yard butterfly by Michael Lemanske; in the 200-yard individual medley by Owens and John Leone; and in diving by McNelis.

When North returns from the holiday break, it opens the Macomb Area Conference Red Division schedule at city rival Grosse Pointe South Tuesday, Jan. 8.

North also swims at Macomb Dakota Tuesday, Jan. 22, as well as hosts division foes Romeo, Tuesday, Jan. 15, and Chippewa Valley Tuesday, Jan. 29.

The league meet is Feb. 21 through 23.
