Blue Devils beat Ford

Grosse Pointe South’s boys’ swimming and diving team evened its record at 1-1 last week, beating Utica Ford 136-46.

Head coach Eric Gunderson and the Blue Devils got off to a fast start as the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay went South’s way.

The team of Jacob Montague, Zachary Due, Andrew Trost and James Seagram won with a time of 1:55.77 and the foursome of Connor Mallegg, Jack Warren, Tyler Leggat and Samuel Wilkinson placed second with a time of 1:56.71.

Devlin Francis won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.72, with Robby Koueiter and Andrew Harrison taking third and fourth with times of 2:04.84 and 2:06.21, respectively.

In the 200-yard individual medley, Patrick Jackson won with a time of 2:07.90 and Douglas Graham took second at 2:12 for the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils took the top seven spots in the 50-yard freestyle, led by Frank Cusumano’s time of 23.83. Wilkinson was second at 25.10 and Patrick Waterston was third at 25.31.

Eric Addy and Erik Romer finished first and second in diving, earning 165.80 and 151.20 points, respectively, and the trio of Graham, Koueiter and Cusumano finished first, second and third in the 100-yard butterfly with times of 1:01.78, 1:03.36 and 1:07.44, respectively.

Jackson won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:20.75 and the Blue Devils’ foursome of Francis, Cusumano, Jackson and Graham won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.46.

In addition, the team of Due, Koueiter, Jimmy Fildes and Waterston took second in the relay with a time of 1:45.18.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Leggat was second with a time of 1:07.26, and Francis won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.29.

Also in the breaststroke, Due and Montague finished second and third with times of 1:14.70 and 1:14.91.

The Blue Devils won the 400-yard freestyle relay with Jackson, Seagram, Wilkinson and Cusumano posting a time of 3:43.16. The squad of Graham, Waterston, Montague and Trost took second with a time of 3:48.83.

In other recent action, South finished seventh with 148 points in the Warrior Relays. Birmingham Seaholm won with 288 points, followed by Birmingham Brother Rice with 270, Ann Arbor Pioneer with 256, Ann Arbor Huron with 196, Warren DeLaSalle with 172 and Grand Blanc with 158.

South also took third in the Midland Invitational. Dexter won with 406 points and Midland took second with 395. South was third with 342.

The Blue Devils’ 200-yard medley relay team of Due, Jack Warren, Leggat and Seagram earned a silver medal with a time of 1:57.67.

In event four, another 200-yard medley relay, the foursome of Jackson, Francis, Nick Yoo and Jack Martin took second with a time of 1:43.57, and Leggat won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:21.89.

Seagram won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.03 and Wilkinson was first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:03.34. Other winners were Yoo in the 100-yard butterfly and Jackson in the same stroke. The meet featured several heats of freestyles, butterflys and other strokes. Yoo had a time of 55.70 and Jackson’s 54.26.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Graham, Cusumano, C.J. Stafford and Martin took second with a time of 1:36.07.
