Wrangling with WOW

GROSSE POINTE SHORES — Wooing cable services from Wide Open West continues to be an issue for cable TV and Internet wallflowers.

“They have been pretty picky about in which community they will construct,” said Mark Wollenweber, Grosse Pointe Shores city manager.

The firm’s marketing strategy plays heavily on door-to-door solicitations, which aren’t allowed in the Shores.

To lure cable competition to the community, Shores officials are considering passage of a slightly liberalized peddling ordinance favorable to Internet providers.

“WOW is willing to construct in Grosse Pointe Shores in 2013 and 2014 if the council passes the soliciting ordinance,” Wollenweber said.

Company representatives are invited to discuss variations on the theme at next month’s city council meeting, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16.

The proposed ordinance amendment maintains some restrictions on door sales.

“It is only for cable companies,” Wollenweber said.

Some Shores officials are concerned the amendment would yield the unintended consequence of unwanted solicitors.
