Died: Wednesday, August 10, 2011
Age: 54
Mark Richie Emery, 54, of Dundee, passed away at his home surrounded by family, Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Emery was raised in the City of Grosse Pointe, attended St. Paul School, Grosse Pointe South High School and merchant marine school to obtain his licenses.

As a merchant mariner for many years, he enjoyed his time working on the Great Lakes, finishing his career as first mate on the J.A.W. Iglehart. He also worked on the Bob-Lo boats from 1975 to 1992. When he wasn’t sailing, he was an avid golfer and had many fond memories of tournaments with his father at the Lochmoor Club.

Mr. Emery could often be found watching his favorite University of Michigan football team with his family by his side either at the Big House or on television. He also wrote poetry and enjoyed traveling with his family, when not on the open seas.

He had a great love of family and frequently hosted many family gatherings at his home. He loved traditions and continued to hold an annual golf tournament in honor of his father. He was loved by many and generous both monetarily and in spirit.

Mr. Emery is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Judy Friedrich; children, Shane, Jennifer, Dylan and Noah; mother, Eileen Emery; siblings, Mary Ellen, John, Lauree, Sally (late Wayne) McMinn and Joanne (Rick) Sintic and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father, John R. Emery.

Like his father, Mr. Emery donated his body to the University of Michigan Medical School. Funeral arrangements are pending.
