Hortense M. Senter

Longtime Grosse Pointe Woods resident Hortense "Hortie" M. Senter, 84, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002 at Canterbury on the Lake in Waterford after an extended illness.

Mrs. Senter was born in Indianapolis, Ind. in 1918 and moved to Detroit in 1920.

She graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in art education. She began teaching art at schools in Detroit until her marriage to Richard H. Senter in 1943 and moving to New York City.

The Senters moved back to the Detroit area after World War II. Mrs. Senter received her master's degree in education from Wayne State University and returned to teaching in Madison Heights.

Her interest in the arts, especially water colors, continued and she joined the Grosse Pointe Artists Association. Mrs. Senter served in several offices, including president from 1984 to 1986.

She is survived by her husband, Richard; her four children, Richard H. (Mary) Senter Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, Stephen M. (Debby) Senter of Piedmont, Calif., Robin (Peter) McKenna of Durand, Laurel (David) Jeris of Naperville, Ill.; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral service was held on Sunday, Oct. 13 at the William R. Hamilton Co. in Birmingham. Interment is at Maple Grove Cemetery in Empire.
