Walter Robert Cavanaugh, 92, died on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, in Venice, Fla.

Born in 1912, in Detroit to John and Florence Cavanaugh, he graduated from the University of Detroit in 1937, and earned his degree as a chartered life underwriter from American College in 1955.

He established Walter R. Cavanaugh, CLU and Associates in 1941, where he was employed until his retirement in 1974.

Mr. Cavanaugh was a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Roundtable and a member of the Country Club of Detroit, the Detroit Athletic Club and Plantation Golf and Country Club.

He played the national senior tennis circuit from age 62 to 82, was the winner of four national titles, and ranked in the top 10 for his age group.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; his children, Patricia (Frederick) LaFontaine, Virginia (Hendrick) Rivard, Michael J. (Jill), Thomas J., Eleanore (John) McDowell, Maureen Vandermark and Dennis (Pamela); his 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Mary Raven.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at St. Clare of Montefalco Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe Park.

Interment is in Holy Childhood Cemetery in Harbor Springs.
