Anne Marx

Died: Friday, April 11, 2003
Longtime City of Grosse Pointe resident Anne C. Marx passed away on Friday, April 11, 2003, from post-surgical complications.

Born in New Bedford, Mass., Mrs. Marx moved to Michigan more than 60 years ago, when she maried Leo A. Marx, an automobile parts executive, but she never lost her New England accent.

She served on the board of directors of Bon Secours Hospital for a number of years, was named their Volunteer of the Year in 2001 and had been president of the Bon Secours Assistance League. She also received the Award of Honor of the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan in 1991.

Mrs. Marx was also active for a number of years in the League of Catholic Women, who named her Woman of the Year in 1974, and was very supportive in a variety of ways for both the Carmelite nuns and Jesuit priests.

During a distinguished career in volunteer work, Mrs. Marx was also president of the Austin Mothers Club, chairwoman of the First Action Auction for the Academy of the Sacred Heart, a member of the St. Paul Altar Society and hostess of the annual NCC Jubilee.

Mrs. Marx was a member of the Detroit Athletic Club, the Mackinac Island Yacht Club and the Country Club of Detroit.

She organized a number of extended family vacations, leading her fourteen children, in-laws and grandchildren through numerous trips to Europe, the Middle East and the Far East.

She is survived by her son, Owen (Patricia); and her daughter, Katy (Hal) Messacar; her daughter-in-law, Sharon; her grandchildren, C.T., Bradley, Patrick, Molly and Annie Marx and Court, Jody and Merrill Messacar; her niece, Phillis (Patrick) Reed; and her nephews, John (Ixa) and Bill (Katy) Polley.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leo; and her son, Lee.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, April 15, at St. Paul Catholic Church.

Arrangements were made by Chas. Verheyden Inc. in Grosse Pointe Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bon Secours Hospital or to the charity of one's choice.
