Rachel Graves Brake

Died: Tuesday, April 22, 2003
Former City of Grosse Pointe resident Rachel Graves Brake, 87, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at the Sunset Village in Sylvania, Ohio.

Born in Arkansas, Mrs. Brake grew up in Illinois.

She earned her bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University. In 1944, she earned her master of education degree from Colorado State College of Education.

Mrs. Brake was a teacher before joining Scott Foresman Publishers as a consultant.

She later served as director of instruction at Hibbing, Minn., as an educational consultant for the Wayne County Board of Education, and as an educational consultant in Detroit.

Mrs. Brake traveled the world with the love of her life, Charles E. Brake, the former superintendent of Wayne County Schools. Following his death in 1972, Mrs. Brake became a faculty member at the University of Detroit.

She has been a member of the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church for more than 30 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Margaret Brake of Detroit; her brother, Dr. James H. (Sue) Graves; her friends and sisters-in-law Helen Graves and Frieda Graves; and many nieces, nephews, in-laws, outlaws and extended family members.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles; her sister, Thelma Arnold; and her brothers, Harold and Allen Graves.

A funeral service was held on Sunday, April 27, at Chas. Verheyden Inc. in Grosse Pointe Park.
