Rita Louise Perkins

Died: Monday, April 21, 2003
St. Clair Shores resident Rita Louise Perkins, 87, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2003, at Bon Secours Hospital.

Mrs. Perkins was born in Detroit to English immigrants. Her father established the Harper Printing Company on the east side of Detroit and it continued under family proprietorship for 70 years.

Mrs. Perkins graduated from Denby High School and was employed as a bookkeeper at Kahn Music Store, where he met her husband, Earle James Perkins, a musician from Windsor, Ontario. They married and settled in Grosse Pointe, Detroit and St. Clair Shores.

Her husband's orchestra, "The Earle Perkins Orchestra" thrived for 40 years, during which, Mrs. Perkins' role as wife, mother and homemaker added the solid values of warmth, color and love to the three homes she and her husband built in Grosse Pointe.

Mrs. Perkins enjoyed family gatherings, knitting and gardening, as well as her time spent as a gift shop volunteer for Detroit schoolchildren and at Beachside Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Mrs. Perkins is survived by her daughter, Judy (Bill) Brownscombe; her sons, Dennis (Bonnie) and David; her grandchildren, Brett, Tyler and Darby Brownscombe, Gabrielle Perkins, Mariah Perkins, Ryan (Lisa) Perkins, Stacy (Bob) Bertani and Holly (Steve) Gelfand; and her great-grandchildren, Emily Bertani, Lauren Perkins and Hadley Gelfand.

She was predeceased by her husband, Earle James Perkins; her sister, Mavis Nash; and her brother, John (Joan) Nash.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 23, at Cadillac Memorial Gardens.
