Lott must resign

To the Editor:

It is with reluctant resolve that I join the chorus to remove Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott of Mississippi.

Public servants deserve the benefit of the doubt, but not when they reveal their true colors by praising a mean-spirited extremist (Sen. Strom Thurmond) upon his retirement after 50 years of service to the people of South Carolina.

Lott meant what he said. This was no slip of the tongue, but another verification of where he really stands.

How can he represent the views of the Republican Party?

President Bush (no liberal himself) rightly disowned Lott's remarks, and it's time for him to go.
