The month of January marks the annual observance of School Board Recognition Month Ñ a time to salute the work of school board members and celebrate public education.
The theme of this year's celebration, "They're Counting on You: Leadership for Learning," reflects our combined commitment to leadership and accountability assuring that all children succeed.
In the School District of the City of Harper Woods, school board members must develop policies and make tough decisions on complex educational and social issues which impact the entire Harper Woods community. They bear responsibility for an annual budget that exceeds $10 million; educates over 1,100 students; and employs about 125 dedicated, quality staff members Ñ in three old, inefficient buildings.
They carry out the truest form of representative government in our democracy Ñ volunteer public service. And they preserve the core of our democratic land Ñ public education.
I invite the Harper Woods community to recognize and celebrate the work of your school trustees. Invite them out for coffee.
Ask how you might help support your local neighborhood schools. Write the school board members a thank you note. Let them know that you appreciate what they do for the kids in Harper Woods.
The men and women serving the School District of the City of Harper Woods are: Jim Dennis, Dan Lusch, Claudia Mahon, Rick Sherrill, Debbie Caminita, Sabrina Douglas and Joel Killenberg.
