In the season opener for both teams, visiting University Liggett beat Grosse Pointe North 1-0.

"I thought we held our own against a nice team," North head coach Brittany Paquette said. "We don't have the depth like we did last year, so I told the girls they have to condition and condition a lot since the girls are going to see a lot of minutes this season."

The Knights' goal scorer was junior Megan DesMadryl, with junior Grace Scarfone drawing the assist.

Each team had scoring chances, but it was the Knights which had more and made the most of its golden chance that DesMadryl tallied.

"We're still getting up to speed, but we will be all right," Paquette said. "It's been an easier transition this year compared to last, but we still have a lot of work to do."

Liggett's Jayant Trewn made his debut for the Knights and it was successful.

His players have been conditioning for two weeks and used the speed advantage with DesMadryl.

For North, senior captains Karina Lucchese and Anna Gruber, as well as junior captain Elaina Emig, led the way.

Liggett is 1-0 and North 0-1.
