The Grosse Pointe South girls' soccer team came so close to winning a Division 1 regional championship last week.

However, the offense couldn't get the clutch goal and in the end they couldn't convert in a shootout as the Blue Devils lost 1-0 to Macomb Area Conference Red Division foe Utica Ford in the regional title contest.

Head coach Gene Harkins and his Blue Devils were ready to go in the rubber match. South beat Ford on the road and lost to the Falcons at home.

Both teams knew each other well and there would be no surprises in this game.

It was not surprising the game went to overtime as defense and goaltending was the name of the game.

In the shootout, Ford goalkeeper Nikki Topping stopped all three of South's attempts. Ford's offense converted its first three to clinch the regional title game.

Grosse Pointe South finished the season 12-6-5 overall.

In the regional semifinals, South edged Macomb Dakota 1-0 on a first-half goal by senior Kathy Collins, assisted by senior Carly Ventimiglia.

It was another successful season for Harkins, but another disappointing finish.

Harkins loses several seniors to graduation; Collins, Ventimiglia, Dee Dee Burns, Emily Rubens, Sydney Calhoun, Ellie Zak, Annika Nixon, Mary Weipert, Franny Weber, Dani Ventimiglia and Cathy Caputo.
