June 12, 2014For the first time since 2005, Grosse Pointe South boys' baseball team can call itself regional champions.
South played the Division 1 regional tournament at nearby Grosse Pointe North and beat Detroit Western International 10-0 in the semifinals and U-D Jesuit 4-2 in the title game.
"The guys played a couple of really good games and it's nice to finally win a regional title which has eluded us the past few years," head coach Dan Griesbaum said.
In the semifinal, Jimmy Menchl earned the win, pitching the first three innings.
He gave up only three hits and one walk and struck out one. Richie Kish tossed the final two innings and gave up only one hit with one strikeout.
The Blue Devils scored single runs in the first and second innings, but put the game away after scoring seven runs in the third inning.
In the big inning, Jacob Stone had a two-run single and James Fishback hit a two-run triple.
Others with RBIs were Kish, Ron Williams, Justin McMann and Zach Thalgott.
Next was the Cubs. These squads met in the regionals the past few years with the Blue Devils coming out on top in 2012 and losing last spring.
This time, it was Menchl pitching another great game. He went seven innings, giving up only five hits, two earned runs, zero walks and four strikeouts.
"Jimmy has been very good on the mound the past few weeks and he is leading our staff right now," Griesbaum said. "He threw really well against U-D and we scored some runs for him."
Menchl had the Cubs shutout until the final inning.
McMann and Brett Bigham had sacrifice flies to score runs, while Ryan Liagre and Fishback had run scoring singles.
Grosse Pointe South improved to 25-17.
