After a couple of disappointing weeks, Grosse Pointe South boys' golf team put its game in full motion last week, winning a Division 1 district tournament at St. Clair Shores Golf Course.

South won with a 295, followed by Warren DeLaSalle at 305, Grosse Pointe North at 315, Warren Woods-Tower at 350, Warren Mott at 355 and Fraser at 365.

"The guys came out focused and ready to play today," South head coach Rob McIntyre said. "They shot some fantastic scores and I can tell they are ready for the regionals. It was a great day to play golf and the course was in good shape."

The Blue Devils were led by four players who each shot in the 70s. Freshman Teddy Schooff was the tournament winner, firing a 71.

Junior Reis Becker had a 72, followed by junior David Szymanski with a 73 and junior Brennan Ifkevits with a 79.

"The pin placements were tough, so it made the guys focus more to get approach shots in good position for birdie chances," McIntyre said. "Our guys did a nice job managing the course and putting themselves in position shot by shot."

For North head coach Peter Kingsley and the Norsemen, junior Jack Muschong and sophomore J.P. Navetta shot a 77, while senior Chase Wujek had an 80 and senior Eddie Nepi posted an 81.

Kingsley said prior to the tournament, he expected his players to take it one hole at a time and not get ahead of themselves. He wanted them to stay focused and continue their recent string of solid outings.

The Norsemen followed the game plan and finished a solid third to yet again make a trip to the next phase of the state playoffs, the regional tournament.

Other teams competing in the district tournament were Detroit Cass Tech, Detroit Martin Luther King, Eastpointe East Detroit, St. Clair Shores Lakeview, Warren Cousino and Sterling Heights.

Next for North and South is the regional Thursday, May 29, at The Orchards.
