Grosse Pointe United's gymnastics team beat eight other squads last weekend to win the 2014 Fraser Gymnastics Invitational, earning a score of 138.75 points to tie the event record.

With several gymnasts in the starting lineup out of the meet with illness or other conflicts, Grosse Pointe's remaining gymnasts stepped up to lead the team to victory.

Isabelle Nguyen and Maria Nguyen finished first and second in the Division 1 All-Around competition, while Michelle Ellis took the Division 2 All-Around Title.

Isabelle Nguyen also won the vault and uneven bars events with scores of 9.5 and 9.3, respectively, and Maria Nguyen won the floor exercise in Division 1 with a score of 9.55.

Other gymnast placements in the Division 1 competition were Maria Nguyen, second in vault with a score of 9.475, fifth on bars at 8.525 and third on beam at 8.4; and Isabelle Nguyen, second on floor with a score of 9.45 and beam at 8.7. Isabelle Nguyen's 9.5 in the vault was also a Fraser Invitational record.

In the Division 2 competition, Ellis placed sixth on vault with a score of 8.65, second on bars at 8.05 and third on beam with an 8.1, while Jennifer Gmeiner placed third on bars with a 7.975 and second on beam with an 8.2. Gyanei' Johnson placed seventh on beam with a 7.55 and sixth on floor with an 8.5.

In addition, Brenna Bromwell scored a 7.8 on floor and Samantha Rogers had an 8.15 on vault for Grosse Pointe.

Grosse Pointe will compete in the Jeanne Caruss Invitational this Saturday at Lakeland High School with 18 other teams from across the state.
