February 20, 2014The Grosse Pointe South boys’ swimming and diving team continued its mastery of the Macomb Area Conference Red Division last week, winning another dual meet title with a 144-41 in over Romeo.
Head coach Eric Gunderson watched his Blue Devils win all 12 events as they improved to 4-0 in the MAC Red Division and 7-2 overall.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Connor Mallegg, Robby Koueiter, Jacob Montague and Patrick Waterston won with a time of 1:45.88, and the 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Devlin Francis, Waterston, Sam Wilkinson and Nick Yoo took first with a time of 1:32.89.
The 400-yard freestyle relay foursome of Yoo, Doug Graham, Cam Francis and Montague also placed first with a time of 3:27.52.
In diving, Eric Addy edged teammate Erik Romer, 214.95-211.60, to help the Blue Devils earn 10 out of a possible 15 points.
In other events, Jack Martin won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.58 and Wilkinson and Cam Francis were right behind with times of 1:54.72 and 1:58.46.
Yoo and Zach Due played first and second in the 200-yard individual medley, turning in times of 2:12.06 and 2:19.34, and the Blue Devils swept the 50-yard freestyle with Jackson, Devlin Francis and Waterston posting times of 22.79, 23.43 and 23.48, respectively.
Montague, Koueiter and Waterston placed first, second and third in the 100-yard butterfly with times of 55.49, 56.99 and 1:00.05, and in the 100-yard freestyle, Devlin Francis and Graham placed first and second with times of 51.21 and 53.05, respectively.
Cam Francis easily won the 500-yard freestyle, posting a time of 5:16.28, and Andrew Harrison was second at 5:45.03.
In the final two individual events, Jackson and Mallegg took first and second in the 100-yard backstroke with times of 52.80 (new pool record) and 58.59, while Montague, Martin and Warren took the top spots in the 100-yard breaststroke with times of 1:05.01, 1:07.13 and 1:12.29, respectively.
Coming up next for South is the Macomb Area Conference Red Division Swimming and Diving championship meet.
South hosts the meet, which runs Thursday, Feb. 20 to Saturday, Feb. 22.
Senior Matt Mandel was honored with the rest of his upperclassmen teammates at the annual Georgetown Hoya swimming and diving team senior meet Jan. 25 against Drexel University held on campus at the McCarthy Pool.
Mandel, a 2010 Grosse Pointe South graduate and four-year swimmer for the Blue Devils, holds six Georgetown Hoya men’s all-time swim records.
A senior co-captain, Mandel graduates in May with a bachelor of arts in government and minors in economics and psychology. He competed for the final time in the Big East Conference Championships, hosted by Villanova University, Feb. 19 to 23.
