Grosse Pointe North’s Andrew Lock competed in last weekend’s Division 1 individual regional tournament at Walled Lake Northern.

Lock advanced to the state finals after winning a 3-2 decision over Livonia Stevenson’s Connor Vaughan in the finals of the 160-pound weight class.

North head coach Eric Julien has seen Lock mature as a wrestler and making a strong statement in his senior season has solidified him as one of the state’s best grapplers.

Lock wrestles in the Division 1 state finals the weekend of Feb. 27 at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Earlier in the week, South’s team lost to Fraser 70-10 in a regional semifinal. Macomb Dakota went on to win the title after beating Fraser in the finals.

“We had a lot of fun and it’s fulfilling to see the kids wrestle hard to get to this point,” South head coach Tony Cimmarrusti said. “We were up against a very talented Fraser team in the regionals, but our kids gave it their best shot and that is what I asked of them.

“It was great to see our assistant coaches (Nate Goodall, Patrick Salazar, Sergio Rodriguez and Frankie Pangborn) give the program a lot of dedication which means a lot to me and this program.”

Grosse Pointe South finished the season 7-23 overall.

The Blue Devils lose four seniors, Alex Manchester, Colin Brannagan, Caleb Cimmarrusti and Jacob Murray.

Coming back next season should be underclassmen Earl Allard, Martinez Bennerman, John Drew, Cameron Ennis, Jonathan Gough, Matthew Ground, Antoine Herrell, Joseph Kurta, James Nunley, Khalee Simpson and Tyler Thompson.
