It took four long weeks before the Grosse Pointe South girls’ hockey team finally played its home opener.

The Blue Devils hosted Northville Sunday, Dec. 15, and won 4-1 behind a solid team effort.

The Blue Devils scored twice in the first period, with senior captain Tenley Shield tallying at the 9:08 mark and sophomore Gennie Martin tallying at the 2:12 mark.


Junior Libby Erickson and sophomore Grace Moody assisted Shield’s goal, and Shield assisted Martin’s goal.

The Mustangs got on the board early in the second period, with junior Marisha Hackett netting the tally.

Senior Anne Crowley gave the home team some breathing room, scoring a goal at the 6:00 mark. Freshman Emma St. John earned the lone assist.

Martin put the finishing touches on the scoring, tallying a goal at the 2:43 mark of the second period, with Shield and Erickson netting assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Isabella Strickler earned another win in net.

In other action last week, South lost 8-1 at Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood and defeated Livonia Ladywood 4-2.

Shield scored the Blue Devils’ lone goal early in the third period to prevent the shutout at CK.

Against Ladywood, Strickler was the No. 1 star. She stopped three breakaways and several point-blank slap shots to help the Blue Devils earn the road victory.

The Blue Devils scored twice in the opening period, with Martin tallying at the 4:11 mark and Crowley scoring at the 1:30 mark.

Shield and freshman Margaret Reilly assisted Martin’s goal, while St. John drew the lone assist on Crowley’s goal.

In the second period, Shield scored, with Martin netting the assist, and Martin tallied at the 14:12 mark of the third stanza to give the Blue Devils a comfortable 4-0 advantage. Erickson had the assist.
