October 24, 2013The Grosse Pointe North boys’ tennis team tied for 14th in last weekend’s Division 2 state finals tournament at Holland.
Midland Dow easily won the championship, finishing with 37 points.
Head coach John VanAlst and his Norsemen earned four points.
Jacob Zacharias had a good tournament at No. 1 singles, beating Gabriel Richard’s John Rhind 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and Alpena’s Abram Purol 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. His tournament run ended with a 6-2, 6-1 loss to No. 2 seed William Kirkman of Midland Dow.
Matthew Kain lost 6-3, 6-0 to Divine Child’s Stephen Harvey in the opening round at No. 2 singles, and Max Stallings dropped a 6-3, 6-0 match to Groves’ Blake Small in the first round at No. 3 singles.
At No. 4 singles, Tyler Scoggin lost 6-3, 7-5 to Will Moller of Holly in his first round match.
Connor Olzem and Nick Cusmano had a good first day, beating Zeeland East’s Tycen Niehuis and Cole Potter 6-2, 6-3, but lost 6-3, 6-1 to Dow’s Jason Chang and Vikram Shanker in the next round at No. 1 doubles.
The Norsemen’s No. 2 doubles team of Josh Champney and Mitchell Zacharias lost 6-2, 6-2 to Forest Hills Central’s Nico Finelli and Joey McClure, and the No. 3 doubles squad of Tom Rafaill and Zack Josefiak defeated Northview’s Matthew Oomkes and Stewart Barber 6-0, 6-4 in the first round, but lost 6-3, 6-2 to Dow’s Seamus Bartlett and Daniel Mango in the next round.
Andrew Delas and Ben Zacharias lost 6-3, 6-3 to Zeeland East’s Marcus Saloman and Trent Potter.
