It took the Grosse Pointe South girls’ volleyball team a game to get the rust out, but once it did the home squad was all business in a 17-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-13 win over Chippewa Valley early last week.

“We have been working on some different lineups at practice and we knew it would take a game or so to get the kinks out,” head coach Kevin Nugent said. “Chippewa Valley has a good team, but we knew we had to stick to our game plan in this match, which we did and pulled out a win.”

The Blue Devils had no rythem in the opening game as attacks went long and the Big Reds were able to net several points off unforced errors.

Nugent’s players regrouped between the first and second games. The intensity returned and they dominated the final three games to pull out the Macomb Area Conference White Division match.

“It’s nice to get Izzy (Murphy) back in the lineup, but I have to say her absence made our girls step up and fill her void,” Nugent said. “We’re a better team now and it’s our goal to play our best volleyball as we head into the state playoffs.”

Leading the charge were setters Paige Hall and Carina Bertakis, plus servers Kayli Johnson and Sydney Srebernak.

Offensively, the Blue Devils had four hitters contributing, Hannah Adams, Grace Metry, Lexi Kohut and Murphy.

Grosse Pointe South improved to 6-1 in the MAC White and 25-11-4.
