Knights post solid results at invite

September 19, 2013
The 46th annual Holly Invitational offered great conditions for racing and a terrific field of athletes from nearly 100 teams from across the state.

Liggett running athletes participated in five events and raced to strong finishes throughout.

Julia Zehetmair, Lola Ristovski and Andrew Wu who raced to season bests on the rolling terrain of Springfield Oaks Park.

Danny Bernas was the lone Liggett representative in the boys’ middle school race, and despite getting knocked down in the opening 400 meters he bounced back to finish strong.

Page Cassidy joined the lead pack of three runners at the start of the girls’ race and finished third overall. She was followed by Annalies Ondersma and Naomi Yoshida, who earned a medal and a ribbon, finishing among the best of the day.

The girls’ varsity race had 12 teams, including 2012 defending state champion Homer, 5th place Saugatuck, and 8th place Shrine. They were joined by a talented group from Sandusky.

Not surprisingly, these teams took the top spots in the meet, but Liggett was next in 5th place in the division, with the Knights led by freshman Maddie Wu in 19th place, as well as senior Danielle Lorant and sophomore Madison Jerome in 24th and 26th. Taylor Slayton, Sarah Galbenski, Dominque Iannuzzi and Hannah Hodges rounded out the top seven.

In the boys’ varsity race, every Liggett runner scored a seasonal best time and raced well in the face of challenging competition. The team’s primary goal was each athlete would race with intensity and demonstrate strength when faced with challenges on the course.

The boys were led by senior Dylan Goitz in 22nd place and junior Will Gilbert in 23rd, with junior William Loner in 37th. Freshman Nick Brusilow and 10th grader Anthony Galea rounded out the top five with personal best times and hard charging efforts especially over the final 800m of the race.
