The Grosse Pointe South girls’ field hockey team opened its division slate last week and struggled to score goals.
The Blue Devils lost 3-0 to the Washtenaw Whippets and 1-0 to Ann Arbor Huron in a game, which ended after only one half of play.
With the girls minutes into halftime, one bolt of lightning led to a 30-minute delay, and 15 minutes later, several more rumbles of thunder and more lightning lit up the sky.
Heavy rains followed and that is when officials called off the second half. It was an official game due to the fact that one half had been played.
Head coach Millie Tompkins and her Blue Devils made the 170-mile trek to Grand Rapids to battle Forest Hills Central High School.
Neither team could push home a goal and the game ended 0-0, sending South to an 0-2-1 start in the Michigan High School Field Hockey Association Division 1 and 2-3-1 overall.
