Convincing victory in season opener

September 19, 2013
The Grosse Pointe South varsity Red Barons picked up right where it left off last season, with a 34-6 victory over Chesterfield in the opener.

The Barons were led by quarterback and receiver Davis Graham, who threw a touchdown, caught a touchdown and ran for a touchdown, while also scoring an extra point.

Graham’s touchdown pass went to the fleet-footed wide receiver Jhordan Rush, who took it 72 yards to pay dirt. Quarterback Darrick Hollowell lofted the 17-yard scoring pass to Graham in the corner of the end zone, and kicker/receiver Cam Shook caught a conversion pass and kicked a PAT, as well.

Standout linebacker and fullback Cam Sparkman scored his first TD as a Baron, thanks to the blocking of Brennan Zihlman, Lawrence Peavy, Tanner Belanger, Lawson Wohlfarth, Anthony Ramsey, Miles Dearing and Jack Ratsek.

Rush added another score on a drive fueled by the blocks of Ed Kotula, Grayson Kennedy, Parker McKowen, Truman McKay, Presley Kaleta and Armani Williams.

Defensively, the Barons solid linebacking crew of Graham, Sparkman and Wally Kinni-Adebayo stifled the Chesterfield running game. Defensive backs Brett Thalgott and Joey DiMambro each had an interception, and strong safety Max Stricker made several key tackles for a loss.

The Grosse Pointe South varsity Red Barons improved to 1-0 overall.
