Grosse Pointe South’s girls’ swimming and diving team opened its season with an easy 148-35 win over Utica Ford.
The Blue Devils won 11-of-12 events, including the opener when Gabby DeLoof, Jordan Kavanaugh, Katie Graham and Kate Van Pelt posted a 2:01.94 in the 200-yard medley relay.
In the second event, the 200-yard freestyle, Catie DeLoof won with a state-qualifying time of 1:58.34 and Cassandra Morse was second at 2:02.54.
Alex Hughes qualified for the state meet by winning the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:17.89. She was followed by Anne Crowley and Jennifer Maiorana, who had times of 2:19.43 and 2:24.07, respectively.
The Blue Devils had the top five spots in the 50-yard freestyle, of which they scored points with only the top three. Gabby DeLoof won with a state-qualifying time of 24.86, followed by Amy Krausmann at 25.89 and Morse at 26.07.
In diving, Lydia Burton won with 149.70 points. She was followed by Maddie Burgoyne and Allison Mobley with 147.30 and 131.90 points, respectively.
Gabby DeLoof, Claire Young and Abbey Schuetze placed first, second and third in the 100-yard butterfly, posting times of 1:00.80 (state qualifying), 1:02.73 and 1:06.40.
The Blue Devils yet again finished with the three top times in the 100-yard freestyle, with Maiorana, Krausmann and Anne Crowley turning in times of 57.22, 57.65 and 58.37, and in the 500-yard freestyle, Mackenzie Stapleton, Mary Kucharski and Bridget Hubbell placed second, third and fourth with times of 5:47.82, 6:24.10 and 6:29.30.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Crowley, Gabby DeLoof, Graham and Morse won with a state-qualifying time of 1:45.00, and in the final relay, the 400-freestle, Young, Jackie DeLoof, Stapleton and Maiorana won with a time of 4:01.58.
The DeLoof sisters had a one-two finish in the 100-yard backstroke with Catie winning with a state-qualifying time of 1:00.70 and Jackie taking second at 1:06.60. Jennifer Vermet also earned points with her third-place time of 1:08.95.
Hughes won the 100-yard breaststroke with a state-qualifying time of 1:10.50 and Grace Perri also made the state meet with her second-place time of 1:11.49. Young was third with a time of 1:13.77.
South took the trek to Illinois to battle the best team it will face this season, Bishop Fenwick. In the end, Bishop Fenwick beat South 186-84.
Young, Hughes, Maiorana and Morse took second in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:53.02, and Morse was third in the 200-freestyle with a time of 2:03.24.
In the 200-IM, Young was second with a time of 2:15.83, and Hughes came through with a win in the 500-freestyle with a time 5:23.00.
The Blue Devils placed third in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Hughes, Crowley, Frederickson and Graham had a time of 1:49.07, and Young won the next event, the 100-backstroke, turning in a time of 1:00.24.
The Blue Devils concluded the meet by taking second in the 400-freestyle relay as Maiorana, Morse, Crowley and Young had a time of 3:48.82.
