September 05, 2013Grosse Pointe North's football team was impressive in its season-opening 35-0 win over host St. Clair Shores Lakeview last week.
"We played well on both sides of the ball," head coach Frank Sumbera said. "We had some great games by our skilled players and the defense came up with a couple of key stops to help in the win."
The Norsemen broke open a close game by scoring 21 points in the second quarter. They build a 28-0 halftime lead and cruised for a second straight season over an overmatched Lakeview squad.
In the opening quarter, junior quarterback Dan Robinson tossed a 19-yard touchdown pass to senior fullback Martice Dunlap. Senior Brad Centala kicked the extra point to make it 7-0 Norsemen.
The Huskies had a chance to get on the board in the second quarter. They used a 19-play drive to get into the Norsemen's red zone, but a 32-yard field goal try went under the crossbar.
The Norsemen scored on the ensuing possession as Lawrence Bryant capped the 80-yard, six-play drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. Centala kicked his second PAT, making it 14-0.
On the drive, senior running back Tod Long gained 42 yards on three carries and Robinson connected with senior wide receiver Sal Ciaravino for a 38-yard gain.
Long scored on a 35-yard run with 2:48 remaining in the second quarter and Centala's PAT made it 21-0, and the back-breaker came on the Huskies' next possession. Ciaravino intercepted a pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown. The extra point pushed the lead to 28 points and took the wind out of the Huskies' sails.
Another long pass from Robinson to Ciaravino helped set up the Norsemen's final touchdown. Long capped the drive with a 4-yard run to make it a 35-0 lead with 7:43 left in the third quarter.
The Huskies had one final potential scoring drive that stalled inside the Norsemen's 5-yard line. With only seconds remaining, the Huskies fumbled and David Gerlach recovered, ending the game and giving the Norsemen's defense the shutout.
The defense forced three turnovers and limited the Huskies' offense to several three-and-outs.
Offensively, Long rushed for 144 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns, while Bryant had five carries for 38 yards with one touchdown. Robinson completed 6-of-12 passes for 125 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and the leading receiver was Ciaravino with four catches for 90 yards.
Grosse Pointe North is 1-0 overall.
Coming up for the Norsemen is their Macomb Area Conference Blue Division opener at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6, at L'Anse Creuse.
"We're back on the road for the division opener, so we have to get off to a good start," Sumbera said. "We need to play well to win and get off to a good start."
