So far it’s been a smooth transition into the 2013 season for head coach Drew Mascarin and the Liggett boys’ tennis team.

After losing several key players to graduation, Mascarin moved some players up in the lineup and those guys have responded with solid matches.

Last week, the Knights improved to 4-0 with wins over Almont, 7-0, and Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian 6-2.

They were scheduled to play in the Portland Tournament, but rains forced the teams to play matches instead.

“It worked out to where our boys were still able to play a couple of matches before heading home,” Mascarin said. “The competition was good and that is what we wanted. I liked what I saw from our boys.”

Against Almont, the winners were seniors Patrick Diaz, No. 2 singles, and Steven Kneiser, No. 3 singles, and junior Jeffrey Shell, No. 4 singles.

The Knights’ doubles team also won their matches.

Seniors Neil Sekhon and James Jurcak were at No. 1, followed by senior Alan Jurcak and junior August Bonacci at No. 2, sophomore Jack Ninivaggi and junior Alex Dow at No. 3, and freshmen Jackson Benning and Davey Sekhon at No. 4.

Diaz, Kneiser and Shell won their singles matches, while Alan Jurcak and Bonacci, Ninivaggi and Dow, and Benning and Davey Sekhon were victorious.
