The University Liggett girls’ volleyball team finished 1-2-2 in last weekend’s season-opening Oakland Christian Tournament.
“We looked awful in the first game, but progressively improved as the day went on,” head coach Joe LaMagno said. “We have a lot to cover in the next week.
“We weren’t ready to play and we were missing several people, but overall the girls held their own.”
In pool play, the Knights lost to Ann Arbor Greenhills and tied Bloomfield Hills Roeper and Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart.
In order to play in the gold bracket, the Knights had to beat Southfield Christian.
“I was pleased with how the girls responded in the win over Southfield Christian to play in the gold bracket,” LaMagno said. “We weren’t great, but it was a win and we moved on.”
Leading the Knights were junior Courtney deRuiter, setting, and sophomore Emily Kanakry, hitting and blocking.
In the semifinals, Liggett lost 25-11, 25-10 to Greenhills and in the tournament championship match, host Oakland Chrisitan defeated Greenhills 13-25, 25-22, 15-10.
