It was an eye-opening experience for the Grosse Pointe North boys’ tennis team during its season-opening week.

Head coach John VanAlst scheduled the Okemos quad and Grand Blanc Tournament with decent results.

“We played 10 very good teams in our opening week and the boys really responded well to the challenge,” VanAlst said. “All this is in preparation for playing our best tennis in the second half.”

The Norsemen earned three points at Okemos and came back in the next tournament to earn 10 points against the likes of Grand Blanc, Clarkston, Port Huron Northern, Ann Arbor Greenhills and Lakeland.

At Grand Blanc, the No. 2 doubles team of Mitchell Zacharias and Josh Champney won the consolation bracket to highlight the team success.

“The returning veterans did a good job and our younger kids are learning on the fly,” VanAlst said. “I like the direction of the program as we get into the swing of things.”
