The University Liggett boys’ tennis team opened its season last week with an impressive 8-0 win over St. Clair.

The Saints, which compete in the Macomb Area Conference White Division, already opened its season the day before, winning the Blue Water Invitational.

“Beating St. Clair is a nice way for the boys to begin the season,” head coach Drew Mascarin said. “It is even more impressive since St. Clair came off winning an invitational.”

The Knights’ season-opening lineup included singles players T.J. Dulac, No. 1; Patrick Diaz, No. 2; Steven Kneiser, No. 3; and Jeffrey Shell, No. 4.

At doubles, Neil Sekhon and James Jurcak were at No.1, followed by Alan Jurcak and August Bonacci at No. 2.

Jack Ninivaggi and Alex Dow were at No. 3 doubles, and the No. 4 doubles team was Jackson Benning and Davey Sekhon.

Last weekend, Liggett improved to 2-0 overall after blasting host Jackson Lumen Christi 7-1.

Kneiser and Shell both earned hard-fought three-set wins to help the Knights beat JLC.

Dulac and Diaz also won in straight sets to give the visitors a sweep of the singles matches.

“T.J. is off to a nice start to his varsity tennis career,” Mascarin said. “It was nice to see Steven and Neil pull out nice wins and we were able to beat a good Lumen Christi team.”

In doubles, Alan Jurcak and Bonacci won at the No. 2 flight, as did Ninivaggi and Dow at No. 3 and Benning and Davey Sekhon at No. 4.
