Led by 15 points from Jacob Zacharias and a double-double by Justin Kennedy, the Grosse Pointe North boys' basketball team defeated L'Anse Creuse 49-39 last weekend.

Kennedy also added four blocks to go with his 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Zacharias went 3-of-5 from behind the arc.

"Justin played well," head coach Matt Lockhart said. "He cleaned the boards well and played solid defense."

The Norsemen finished strong, and needed to as they started the game off with eight points. They nearly kept the same point total going into halftime, scoring their first basket with 36 seconds left on a layup by Chris Doherty.

"I like how the other kids played. Tim Herd played well early on. He kept us in the game, and played through an injury. Tyler Rheaume played exceptionally well. He grabbed a couple of boards that kept us in the game," Lockhart said. "I had to sit some kids for the first half for some disciplinary reasons, which led to our rough start."

Starting point guard Taiwan Wiggins was one of those players. However, he made his presence felt immediately, scoring while being fouled. He finished with 11 points and two assists.

"Taiwan gave us a spark in the third quarter," Lockhart said. "He was pining away to get in, and he played really well. We played hard."

It seemed like every time the Lancers began to crawl their way out of the deficit in the fourth quarter, North battled back and kept a firm hold on the game.

"L'Anse Creuse played hard, but we played with a better defensive effort in the second half." said Lockhart.

Herd finished with four points and five rebounds, while Rheaume finished with two points, two assists and four rebounds. Robert Tillman, filling in for Wiggins, finished with two points, six rebounds and a magnificent chase, down block in the fourth quarter.

Earlier in the week, North lost 63-38 to division-leading Warren Mott. Kennedy had 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Zacharias had nine points.

Grosse Pointe North is 3-2 in the Macomb Area Conference White Division and 6-4 overall.
