January 31, 2013Senior Jack Guest scored a hat trick to help Grosse Pointe North’s boys’ hockey team blast Warren DeLaSalle 5-0 last week.
Guest assisted on a first-period goal by senior Jeff Herron to give the host Norsemen a 1-0 lead.
He scored the Norsemen’s final two goals in the second period when they outscored the Pilots 3-0 to build a comfortable 4-0 lead. Guest finished off his hat trick with a goal late in the third period.
“We played pretty well tonight and earned another league win,” head coach Scott Lock said.
Guest and his fellow forwards supplied a constant attack. They had 40 shots on net, including junior C.J. Kusch’s second-period goal that trickled through the pads of the Pilots’ goalkeeper.
Led by the goalkeeping tandem of senior Tanner Colborg and junior Josh Champney, they stopped all 20 shots. Colborg played the first two periods and stopped 11 shots, while Champney was in net for the third period and stopped nine shots.
The defense, led by seniors R.C. Nelson and Jack Stander, kept the Pilots’ scoring opportunities at a minimum and the goalies did the rest.
Drawing assists in the last two periods were Herron with three, giving him a four-point night, Nelson and junior Vince Romanelli.
Grosse Pointe North improved to 5-2 in the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League and last weekend hosted one of the top-ranked teams in the state, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood.
The Norsemen lost 4-3 as sophomore Nick Cusmano and Jeff Herron, two, scored goals.
Herron and senior Dave Chavis assisted on Cusmano’s first-period goal, while senior Brendan Keelan and Guest assisted on Herron’s first goal in the third period and Stander and junior Joe Wright assisted on his second tally coming in the final minute.
Grosse Pointe North is 10-6 overall with the playoffs approaching.
