The Grosse Pointe North boys’ swimming and diving team dropped a 115-69 decision to Romeo early last week.

William NcNelis won the diving competition, while Matt Leone was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke.

Head coach Mike O’Connor said season-best performances were recorded in the 50-yard freestyle by A.J. Owens; 100-yard freestyle by Quinn Gallant and Chris Ghanem; 200-yard freestyle by John Leone; 100-yard backstroke by Owens; 100-yard breastroke by Gallant; 100-yard butterfly by Alex Owens; and 200-yard individual medley by Patrick Turnbull and Anthony Cafagna.


In other action last week, Grosse Pointe North defeated L’Anse Creuse North 99-85.

Turnbull and Matt Leone were double winners. Turnbull took the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle, while Leone scored wins in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke.

Matt Stander won the 100-yard breastroke and McNelis won the diving event. The diving contingent of McNelis, first; Duncan MacAskill, second; and Sam Shehadeh, third; were instrumental in the win by sweeping the diving event.

O’Connor said season-best performances were recorded in the 100-yard freestyle by Ghanem; 200-yard freestyle by Michael Rieth; 500-yard freestyle by Danny MacAskill and Jacob Flowers; 100-yard backstroke by John Leone; 100-yard breastroke by Gallant; and diving by McNelis and Shehadeh.

The Norsemen completed a busy week with a 96-87 loss to Dearborn.

Individual event winners for North included Matt Leone in the 50-yard freestyle, Duncan MacAskill in diving, Turnbull in the 100-yard freestyle and Danny MacAskill in the 500-yard freestyle.

Season-best performances were recorded in the 50-yard freestyle by Graham Eger; the 100-yard freestyle by Eger; the 100-yard backstroke by John Leone; the 200-yard individual medley by Cafagna; and diving by Duncan MacAskill.

North is now 3-4 overall and 0-2 in Macomb Area Conference Red Division competition.

Coming up for the Norsemen is a 6 p.m. home meet Tuesday, Jan. 29, against Chippewa Valley.
