Grosse Pointe South’s girls’ hockey team won its season opener Saturday, Nov. 17, beating host Port Huron 4-3 in overtime.

“We rolled three lines and mixed up our defensive pairings for most of the game,” head coach Joe Provenzano said. “Port Huron has some excellent skaters and they played well, but Anastasia (Diamond) came up with some huge saves to help us win the game.

“We had enough offense to win, but there are definitely things we need to work on.”

The Blue Devils built a 3-1 lead on the heels of goals by Darian Dempsey, Lindsey Makos and Libby Erickson.

Port Huron stormed back to tie it, but in the extra session, Dempsey scored the game-winner. She finished with two goals and one assist, while Makos and Erickson each had one goal and one assist.

Others with assists were Eliza Burke, Meghan Polack and Tenley Shield with one apiece.

Diamond faced 39 shots and made 36 saves to move her record to 1-0 on the young season.

Grosse Pointe South is 1-0 in the Michigan Metro Girls High School Hockey League.
