For some special seniors at University Liggett, their high school volleyball career officially ended last week.

Colleen Klimek, Courtney Slabaugh, Ashley Rahi, Victoria Chochla and one of the school's all-time statistical leaders in kills and aces, Tori Wuthrich, ended their final season with a 21-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-20 loss to Auburn Hills Oakland Christian in a Class C regional semifinal match played at Memphis High School.

"We definitely had our chances and we let them slip away," head coach Joe LaMagno said after the tough defeat.

The Knights played well and won the opening game. For most of the season, the Knights floundered in the first game and fell behind in their matches.

Getting ahead of Oakland Christian gave the Knights momentum, which faded with a lackluster performance in game two.

The momentum totally swung in Oakland Christian's favor when it won several big points to win and leave the Knights one game from elimination.

The girls tried, but just couldn't overcome several mental and physical mistakes in the fourth game.

Oakland Christian was led by the trio of Becky VanSloten with 34 kills, Marcella Compeau with 33 digs and Erin Washington with 49 assists.

"When it was 24-20, I just sat on the bench and couldn't believe my high school career could end with the next point," Klimek said the following day. "When the final point was scored, I just put my head down."

The game and the Knights' season ended. The Knights finished 20-14-2 overall.

Despite the loss, LaMagno and his Knights once again enjoyed success.

They won a Michigan Independent Athletic Conference division championship and another district title.

However, they just can't get past the regional part of the state playoffs.

Underclassmen Sarah Edmonds, Kacie Wuthrich, Carina Ghafari, Courtney deRuiter, Olivia Wujek, Jacqueline Kopicki, Natalie Caramagno and Emily Kanakry learned from the seniors it takes intensity, dedication and support to excel.
