Grosse Pointe South boys' tennis team went into the season underdogs, but came away division champions after beating favorite Port Huron Northern early last week.

"We had a big win in a very windy Port Huron," head coach John Willard said. "The boys have practiced hard all season in preparation for matches like this. The boys knew the MAC Red title was on the line and we came ready to compete.

"The boys had to beat PHN to capture the title; since we tied Eisenhower and PHN was undefeated, a tie would have left PHN as the league champion."

Sophomore Nicholas Paolucci played well at No. 1 singles, winning 6-4, 6-4, and freshman Nick Costakis won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles to gain a split of the four matches.

At No. 2 doubles, senior Patrick Dietz and junior Victor Flynn won 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to tie the match at three wins apiece.

Junior Stephen VanWalleghem and sophomore Brendan Clune won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 and at No. 4, senior Eddy Champane and sophomore William Norris cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win.

"Nickolas P. played agressive tennis to defeat a tough player at No. 1 singles and Nick C. played solid tennis to win at No. 4 singles," Willard said. "Our No. 3 and No. 4 doubles teams came together and played very cohesive doubles matches."

With the Blue Devils up 4 matches to 2, they we had to win one of the last two matches.

"Our No. 2 doubles team of Patrick Dietz and Victor Flynn had split sets," Willard said. "They came out strong in the third set by breaking their opponent's serve and going on to win the match 6-3 in the third set and assure GPS of the league championship."

Playing well in defeat were Brian L'Heureux at No. 2 singles, Isaac Piecuch at No. 3 singles and the No. 1 doubles squad of David Wittwer and Michael Schaller.

In other action last week, South beat Grosse Ile 7-1 with Paolucci winning 6-0, 6-0; Piecuch winning 6-0, 6-2; and Costakis winning 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Wittwer and Schaller won 6-0, 6-2; Flynn and Dietz won 6-0, 6-1; VanWalleghem and Clune won 6-1, 6-0; and Champane and Norris won 6-0, 6-2.

Grosse Pointe South finished 3-0-1 in the MAC Red Division and improved to 8-1-1 overall.
