Grosse Pointe Farms resident Elizabeth Palmer has recently been accepted into Teach For America's 2014 teaching corps.

Palmer graduated from University Liggett School in 2007 and will be teaching in New York with Teach For America. She is joining the organization from the Parthenon Group where she was a consultant.

"At Parthenon I became a member of the Education Practice and worked with several large urban districts that are striving to reform schools and improve opportunities for students. I was excited to learn that there are hard-working, brilliant people across the country who are tackling the challenges of our education system. I believe that education inequity is the greatest injustice in the United States today, but it is one that we can fix if we dedicate enough talent and resources. I decided to join Teach For America because I want to gain first-hand experience working to achieve transformational outcomes for my students," Palmer said.

Palmer is joining a diverse group of individuals dedicated to addressing gaps in education. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, by the time they reach fourth grade, students eligible for free and reduced lunch are almost two years behind in reading and a year and a half behind in math when compared to their higher income peers.

"Our corps members and alumni have made a meaningful impact with their students and communities over time," said Elisa Villanueva Beard, co-CEO of Teach For America. "I can't wait to see the leadership, passion, dedication and innovation this year's corps will bring to their classrooms nationwide."

Teach For America is a national nonprofit organization working to expand educational opportunity for low-income students. Corps members commit to teach for two years in high-need urban or rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in pursuit of educational equity.
