North takes second at state championships

April 17, 2014
Grosse Pointe North High School took second place at the Michigan High School Quiz Bowl State Championship, which was held over the weekend at Michigan State University.

The team consisted of students Harrison Campion, Conner Blaine, Harris Bunker, Danny MacCaski II, Pearce Reickert, Nikhil Patel, and Matthew Kain. Advising the team were Jonathan Byrne and Ben Henri.

Detroit Catholic Central High School won the Class A tournament and Holland High School placed third.

Bunker also was nominated for the All-State Honorary Team.

More than 50 high schools from across the state of Michigan competed Friday and Saturday.

The competition was double-elimination and open to quiz teams who won either a league championship or major tournament at some point during the season. All championship teams have the chance to compete in other nationwide quiz bowl competitions.

The annual tournament is sponsored by the MSU Honors College and Meijer. Former Senate Majority Leader Dan DeGrow created the tournament as an annual event 27 years ago.
